Hi Farmer Tom, I'll give a guess There are quite a few vacuum hoses on this truck you are talking about? On some of these there is a valve on the engine cooling system somewhere around the thermostat housing This changes when some things get vacuum. This may be hooked to the EGR valve which will make the engine run terrible till it warms up. (My toyota did this the EGR valve was sticking) Also you can check the booster itself with one of those hand operated vacuum generators Hook it up to the hose after taking it loose from the engine pull a vacuum on it and see if it holds. Or get a vacuum gauge and hook it to the engine start and take reading leave it on till it smooths out and see where you are.
Sticking EGR valves will leak vacuum and you cannot hear it.
