there is oil inside the clutch hub. in the front of the hub is a theromstatic spring, when its cold its at rest. when it gets hot it expands, turning the shaft inside the clutch. the shaft diverts the oil into oncoming fins, making a fluid coupling like your torque convertor.
on a hot day if you rev it up with the hood open, you can hear it turn on and off. usully at idle you dont notice that its working
