HS Tarm wood boilers have been around since the mid seventies. Some of those early models have been discontinued in favor of the more popular gasification models. In the late 70's I had wood and oil combination boiler called the Hoval Duolyte with an integrated domestic hot water tank. Heated with it for 15 yrs. before it leaked.
I will bet your friend spends most of his heating cost savings on home owners insurance if his boiler is inside his home. That is why the OWB is so common in most rural areas.
