Wood gasification boiler

I visited an old friend in Northern NH last week. He showed me his heating plant. It consists of an HS Tarm wood gasification boiler with two 100 gal. tanks for thermal storage. He heats his 2,000 sq. ft. two story with two cord of dry wood. It is dual fuel so when he goes away on a ski trip the oil burner kicks in automatically. He burns about 100 gal of oil a year. Sounds good to me.

HS Tarm wood boilers have been around since the mid seventies. Some of those early models have been discontinued in favor of the more popular gasification models. In the late 70's I had wood and oil combination boiler called the Hoval Duolyte with an integrated domestic hot water tank. Heated with it for 15 yrs. before it leaked.

I will bet your friend spends most of his heating cost savings on home owners insurance if his boiler is inside his home. That is why the OWB is so common in most rural areas.

Real Common in Sweden. Thoger backs his up with five solar panels on the roof that runs an antifreeze
through them and through coils in the tanks. He's in the same latitude as Fairbanks Alaska. The panels
heat domestic hot water all summer and produce enough heat that he doesn't have to start burning wood
until about this time of year. He can heat his house on less than two cords a year. There's another 7
meters of coil in one tank that water passes through to heat the domestic hot water.

We have a jetstream wood boiler, similar idea with 600 gals of
storage.

Needs dry wood, doesnt hold coals at all because its a hot
clean burn. Bit more fussy than regular wood boiler. No smoke
when it lights off proper so thats nice.

I kinda wish we had just gone for the Garn. Bigger wood
chamber, less fuss.

Im just in the early stages of retrofitting a Froling wood
boiler system with 2700L of storage into my old house.
Hoping I will be happy with it.

I've had 3 wood boilers Last 2 have been high effiecency gassers. last one rotted out 2 or3 years ago. They were fussy with wood, high maintanance. I am done. At 72 I am
not going to spend another $12000 for one. I have so much wood to burn, but not going to do it again. I can heat my house for under $2000 a year and not have the grief.
Part of me wants to buy another one, but then my wife and my back talk me out of it again. Loved the wood heat boiler when they worked right. Jim

About 20 years ago, 2003, Duke energy built the
first of its kind, a coal gasification gas
turbine, 15 years later they demolished the power
plant.

A few miles away at Saint Mary of the Woods
college they built a wood gasification boiler.
That didn't last very long.. Not sure why.

On paper it looked. Hopefully there are
improvements.
