There are 2 grades of gasoline available. Regular and premium. Mid grade is just a mixture of the 2 grades.
All gasoline from the refinery goes into the same pipeline. So by the time it gets to the local station the gasoline you are buying at the chevron store might have been refined at the Exxon refinery.
Where the difference in gasoline comes in is when it is loaded into the truck to be delivered to the store. Based on what code the driver puts into the computer decides what additives are injected into the gasoline as it is loaded. So while the driver may be loading gasoline refined at who knows what refinery if he is going to a Exxon store it will always be injecting the Exxon additive into the gasoline.
Now here is where top tier comes in and it has nothing to do with octane levels.
Federal law mandates xx additives need to be added to gasoline for it to be sold. This is done at the refinery because all gasoline needs to have these additives. This is the gas you will buy at Walmart Kroger and any mom and pop unbranded store.
But all the branded stores add an additional additive package into the gasoline for their stores. Exxon puts a tiger in your tank. Chevron has Techron. Im sure shell has a catchy phrase to describe their additives. Today this added additive package is what they are calling top tier gasoline.
This added additives is suppose to help your engine run cleaner. I will let you decide for yourself if they are worth the extra cost of branded gasoline or just snake oil.
