define tier gasoline

The resident TIER expert on here is GEORGE in Ind. maybe he will chime in. I know my shell oil pumps have markings that they are upper Tier gas. All about additives to the fuel for better performance.

The higher the tier, the more tears you cry when you have to pay the bill. The federal gubbmint is exempt....

It's ploy by GM to deny any warranty claims if you don't use gasoline with the appropriate magic pixie dust in it.

You're thinking of <a href=https://www.toptiergas.com/>'Top Tier' gasoline</a>. Top Tier is a trademark of the Top Tier consortium, which consists of several automakers, GM in particular. In order for a gasoline brand to carry the Top Tier designation, it must include an additive package that has been tested and proven to meet <a href=https://www.toptiergas.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/TOP_TIER_Detergent_Gasoline_Performance_Standard_revF_2019-12.pdf>several performance requirements</a>. Most, but not all, of the major brands sell Top Tier gasoline.

Since George brought up this subject a couple of months ago, I have been paying attention. It seems the only pumps that say Top Tier are Cenex, and they are usually the cheapest, or at least no higher.

to me its just a higher grade of octane and all the pumps have 3 choices, 2 for sure. high octane is higher priced. so why not just say high octane then everyone knows.

Top tier fuel is a not a ploy or some marketing gimmick, its a good thing, read up on it. It's hard to believe but with all the strict fuel standards, there is not much consideration to how clean it is from some contaminates or its detergent capability. Top tier level additives are almost 300% higher than federal standards..0

So, if you care to use the highest quality fuel available, then shop at top tier fuel retailers. If you don't care where you buy fuel, you should at least put a bottle of Chevron Techron concentrate in the tank a few times a year.

For a brand to use the Top Tier label, all octane grades of their fuel must meet the Top Tier criteria. So regular, midgrade and premium will all be Top Tier.

Do you know anyone this has happened to? Given that GM recommends, but does not require, Top Tier gasoline, I don't see how they can refuse to honor a warranty claim based solely on the customer's use of non-Top Tier fuel.

I agree. Top Tier is a quality grade of fuel. I purchase Top Tier fuel very near a discount gas store. The prices are almost the same since they are so close together. It has nothing to do with octane.

There are 2 grades of gasoline available. Regular and premium. Mid grade is just a mixture of the 2 grades.

All gasoline from the refinery goes into the same pipeline. So by the time it gets to the local station the gasoline you are buying at the chevron store might have been refined at the Exxon refinery.

Where the difference in gasoline comes in is when it is loaded into the truck to be delivered to the store. Based on what code the driver puts into the computer decides what additives are injected into the gasoline as it is loaded. So while the driver may be loading gasoline refined at who knows what refinery if he is going to a Exxon store it will always be injecting the Exxon additive into the gasoline.

Now here is where top tier comes in and it has nothing to do with octane levels.

Federal law mandates xx additives need to be added to gasoline for it to be sold. This is done at the refinery because all gasoline needs to have these additives. This is the gas you will buy at Walmart Kroger and any mom and pop unbranded store.

But all the branded stores add an additional additive package into the gasoline for their stores. Exxon puts a tiger in your tank. Chevron has Techron. Im sure shell has a catchy phrase to describe their additives. Today this added additive package is what they are calling top tier gasoline.

This added additives is suppose to help your engine run cleaner. I will let you decide for yourself if they are worth the extra cost of branded gasoline or just snake oil.

Mornin Wilson, I dont know the answer, this is another of those type of questions where the gents who typically use Google will have to provide their findings BUT CAN YOU BELIEVE EVERYTHING ON GOOGLE or ANYWHERE on the net ???????? Thats for you to decide.

When in the road all over the USA I buy gas at all sorts of locations, truck stops, walmarts, buccees, Krogers, locals etc I NEVER SEE SIGNS OR INFO ON THE PUMPS as to what tier?????? Never had any trouble !!!
