The WHY really isn't relevant. It's their site and their rules. Same as if you don't condone a certain type of behavior in your house or on your property. Your house, your rules. It's about respecting others even if the other is a giant nameless faceless "evil" corporation.
If I were to guess why, it's because wanted ads are INeffective generally speaking. They may work in certain areas and for certain things but by and large they are a waste of space, annoying, and more trouble than they are worth.
Craigslist at least made a special category for wanted ads. Hopefully you were using that and not being "that guy" who was ignoring the rules there and posting wanted ads in the FOR SALE categories...
