Forgot to ask, are you shifting the H-L-N-R or the 1-8? 1-8 will shift without the clutch if the range is in Neutral. If you can select H-L-N-R without pushing in the clutch pedal, you've got a serious disconnect.
There is an inspection cover underneath the tractor where you can get somewhat of a look at the main clutch I forgot to mention previously. You might be able to see something in there.
