Goodmorning So a couple days back we were square baling with our ih 3288 and it just quit driving. Level ground just coasted to a stop like the clutch was pushed in. No noise no warning of any kind. Pto works. Steering and brakes work. I can put it any range without the clutch while its running without any grinding. Anyone on here familier with these tractor ? Any insight on what to start checking out first ? Thnks in advance

Nothing to check, really. There's only a few things it could possibly be. First is main clutch. Second is TA. Third is differential. Could be some oddball thing too like a twisted off input shaft or something coming apart inside, but you can't tell unless you have x-ray vision.

Well, I think you can see the differential if you pull the 3pt top link bracket off.

Even in a complete hydraulic failure, the tractor should still drive if the TA unit is in good working order. Only the direct drive side of the TA is dependent on hydraulic pressure. The low side is mechanically driven by an overrunning clutch and will still pull the tractor.

Need to get the tractor into a shop and start pulling it apart until the problem is found. Luckily everything I mentioned above starts with a split at the clutch housing so it's not like you'll be taking anything apart unnecessarily. Split it and see if the clutch is bad. If the clutch checks out, move on to the TA.

Does the tractor grind if you try to shift it with your foot off the clutch pedal?

No grinding putting it into gear without pushing in the
clutch pedal. It has a electricaly activated ta. Any
cuance of it being something like a bad solenoid ? Just
wanna try the simple things first if there is anything like
simple

Nope. As I stated, it should still drive on the low side no matter what.

Forgot to ask, are you shifting the H-L-N-R or the 1-8? 1-8 will shift without the clutch if the range is in Neutral. If you can select H-L-N-R without pushing in the clutch pedal, you've got a serious disconnect.

There is an inspection cover underneath the tractor where you can get somewhat of a look at the main clutch I forgot to mention previously. You might be able to see something in there.

Its is the hi low reverse that i can move without thw
clutch Ill have a look behind that cover

welp not being there myself so here is a quick test ya can do . Place the tractor in a gear i don't care what gear and at a little over ideal step on one brake at a time , If ya get a learch from one of the brakes then it is the rear end carrier and major tear down and loads of finger pinchen . Next up on the list is the center of the clutch disc is TOAST . If that is not it then it could be a twisted off input shaft going into the T/A and a new/ rebuilt T/A will be needed . And IF ya have to do the T/A then do the clutch and have the flywheel ground and the step cut , along with that ya do the IDPTO input shaft and bearing . I have seen only two twisted off input shafts in all the time i have worked on I H tractors . Center of the clutch disc torn out yea we have done a few even one of mine pulled the center out of the clutch disc. Fun times ahead .

IS there any linkage to the transmission from the lever.Since I've never been around one of those models asking as maybe that could be it and simple.

Yea , they are just a sorta reworked 826- class tractor same basic transmission rearend and T/A just have cab and the placement of the controls . . Basically they moved the fuel tank and moved the seat forward , moved the controls onto the side of the cab . Other then cab mounting points built into the rear casting everything else is pretty much the same till ya get into the two plus twos and the 50 's and up.

Not completely familiar with the 3288, but we have a 3088. I think I would check the selenoids first. Can even try them with direct batttery power, should hear a click or something. If they test good, I would pull the top plate(s) on the transmission and have a look around. Easier things to do before spliting down. Also check clutch pedal linkages. Paul
