The word ''sucks'' as used in this case traces back to the days of the big bands with lots of wind instruments. When a player lacked wind power to blow, they sucked in to get more air in their lungs to blow out again. All while continuing to play. The audiences, in most cases, couldn't tell. But their fellow musicians knew and when discussing among themselves the attributes of their fellow musicians, ''he sucks'' would often be used to describe a player who did just that. He sucked.
