What wire to the distributor are we talking about ?????
Are we talking about the battery voltage wire that goes to the bolt on the side of the distributor and to the points.
Or are we talking about the high voltage wire that comes out the coil into the center of the distributor cap.
If it is the later you are way past the points condenser and coil. They all have to work for you to get spark to the center of the cap. Only thing down steam from here is the cap; rotor; spark plug wires and spark plugs. So keep tracing the spark. You got spark to the cap. Do you have spark out the cap to the plug wire. Do you have spark through the spark plug wire to the plug itself.
If it is the former post back and we can go over how the primary system (points and condenser) work.
