Back in the day, this kind of work was mostly done by volunteers lending a helping hand. Likely even repairing the bridge.
Today, this kind of work would be hired done and likely lawsuits following to cover the expenses. Not to mention, the township or county (whichever the case) will no longer allow any outside work (volunteer) being done to the bridge for liability reasons. And to think these gents likely had the bridge repaired and back usable the next day. Today, that bridge would likely be out of service for months waiting on the 'right crew' to come and fix it.
Boy how times have changed. Nobody probably even thinks of that stuff when they view these old photos. Just go 'oh neat' and move on.
