Sure would have been a change with some things. Dad tells of his grand pa hollering whoa as the car ran off in the swamp when he first started driving. Grandma told of Grandpa on my moms side pulling into the garage and out the back end with no doors. She told him she always wanted a bigger garage.

(quoted from post at 03:43:47 05/01/23) I would guess they were going to get upright then build a road.

I agree. It is apparent that the current phase is to get it set upright, which will not be too difficult. Once it is upright it could be lifted up to the deck with a big derrick but I think that building a road to tow or drive it out would be a lot easier. If they were to bring it up onto the bridge and set it down on some beams, it may roll only another ten feet and drop through again.

Yah, these modern contraptions bought by the BTOs are ruining the roads and now the taxpayers will have cough up some more of their hard-earned money to fix a perfectly useable bridge even to be able to get to church! There outa be a law, probably a kid drivin....next thing ya know the county will have to put up weight-limit signs on all the bridges.....

For sure not a good day.My grandfather
told me of more than one engine dropping
threw a bridge. Most all those bridges
were built for horse and wagon freight in
mind. Not a steam engine full of water and
coal.

Back in the day, this kind of work was
mostly done by volunteers lending a helping
hand. Likely even repairing the bridge.

Today, this kind of work would be hired
done and likely lawsuits following to cover
the expenses. Not to mention, the township
or county (whichever the case) will no
longer allow any outside work (volunteer)
being done to the bridge for liability
reasons. And to think these gents likely
had the bridge repaired and back usable the
next day. Today, that bridge would likely
be out of service for months waiting on
the 'right crew' to come and fix it.

Boy how times have changed. Nobody probably
even thinks of that stuff when they view
these old photos. Just go 'oh neat' and
move on.

(quoted from post at 09:01:10 05/01/23) I wonder if the guy sitting under the bridge holding his head on the right side of the picture was the driver.
would bet with ya on that observation!
