In late October, 1958, my dad had an accident with a corn picker and his left arm was amputated below the elbow. My older brother had been discharged from the army for 2 days and just returned home and I was 10. 4 days later 42 neighbors, friends and relatives driving corn pickers, tractors and even elevators to finish 130 acres of corn.The lumber yard brought out 9 rolls of snow fence to build 3 temp cribs and told Mom just to take care of it and return it when the corn was gone! The Philips 66 station furnished the fuel. Everyone ate in the garage at noon and again about 2:30 when things wrapped up. They ate in the area of the garage as it had 3 rows of food!I even stayed home from school! Dad was not out of the hospital at that time but it was explained to him everyone was just about finished and they wanted to get it done while he was under high rates of meds and wouldn't argue with them! Dad farmed until 1974 when my brother and I took it over.
