I would get a manual for the SOS that includes directions for the band adjustment first. Band adjustment isn't terribly difficult if you have a torque wrench and some basic mechanical skills. I purchased a good running model 871-D last summer but the transmission seemed to be bad. I decided it was worth my time adjusting the bands according to the book. The transmission works great now. In my opinion they are great transmissions when working properly. Band adjustment is a maintenance issue. If they are slipping or not shifting properly band adjustment may be needed. If they require more work or replacing internal parts, it can get expensive or parts are no longer available. A 5 speed transmission becomes a good transplant for the failed SOS.
