I'm having a hard time diagnosing this. The tractor ran fine for weeks. Then, it began to pop out the exhaust and sputter and backfire.
I've cleaned the carb and adjusted it perfectly and it runs on an 860 I have, so the carb setup is ok. I replaced the 6V coil with a new 6V coil and no change. The wires and plugs are clean, the points are set to the factory gap.
Here's what I'm wondering and if I can test for this. Is it possible for the cam timing to jump? The engine will crank and almost start but it pops out the carb. It will not stay running, despite the carb and ignition being good. Last thing I can think of is an off timed cam.
Is it a chain driven cam, and if so, does the chain ever jump on this 172CI engine? Is there a way to check the cam to crank timing without removing the front of the engine(I have a loader on this)?
It ran great for more than a year, then it just started popping and backfiring while brush hogging.

In this segment we will finish up on our fasteners and then work with ways to keep them from loosening up in the field. Capscrews, bolts and nuts are not the only means of holding two parts together. When dealing with thinner metals like sheet tin, a long bolt and
