When it will only run on spray, either there is no fuel in the carb bowl, or the main circuit is plugged.
Try removing the drain plug in the bottom of the carb. There should be a steady flow of fuel, not a drip or stop. If there is a fuel pump, it should flow fuel when the engine is being cranked.
If fuel in the bowl, the solenoid is the next place to look. The function of the solenoid is to open the main jet to let the engine run, and close the jet to stop the fuel when the ignition is off. This prevents run-on of a hot engine, and prevents unburned fuel from passing through the engine as it coasts to a stop.
It is possible the solenoid is bad, or not getting power to retract the needle, or the tip of the needle is broken off and stuck in the opening blocking the fuel flow.
