I usually will rinse a gas tank out with a little lacquer thinner and let it dry. If I'm in a hurry I will put an air hose in the tank at very low pressure for about 5 hours. It's the fumes that make the tank dangerous. If you open up as many openings in the tank that you can it will make it safer. I've had a tank ignite and all it does is make a woof noise as the fumes ignite. More un-nerving than dangerous.
