The Deere 105 combine with a gas engine I used to have blew a power steering line with the oil shooting straight on a muffler that glowed red at night. The steering got a little funky and out of the corner of my eye I saw a cloud of white smoke coming out of the engine compartment behind the grain tank. I turned off the key but the engine kept dieseling and wouldn t stop running. All the time it was dieseling it was pumping oil on the muffler. I put the tranny in high gear and dumped the clutch but the belts couldn t hold well enough to kill it. Choking didn t stop it. Finally through choking, dumping the clutch and jamming the separator in gear I got it killed. There was no anti diesel solenoid on the carb until a couple model years later.
Why there was no fire will be a mystery to me for the rest of my life and I will remember this for the rest of my life. It gave me a good thorough cardio. After the line blew a second time with the same results I dug farther and found the relief valve cocked a little so it would not pop off. For the rest of the years I owned that combine I avoided hitting the stop when I made a short turn even when the relief valve was fixed and operating OK.
