I put a front mount pump on a d-17 allis chalmers several years ago to operate a loader. it was a good size pump and I put it's own reservoir on as well as a two spool valve for the loader as well as a two spool valve for rear hydraulics. It work really well and caused no problems. I used it to mow with a haybine as well as pulled a small round baler. plenty of oil supply so no waiting on the gate to open or close. Also no problem cranking to start although it was a gas tractor.
