As for the rear engine seal, you will be glad you just pulled the engine. Not sure but that may be the only way.
A seriously leaking rear seal is usually an indication there are deeper engine problems. Loose main bearings, and an engine with excess blow by will cause oil leaks. Many times replacing just the seal will result in a temporary fix or failure to stop the leak.
Sometimes a minor leak can just be lived with, or be reduced by running the oil level slightly low. Be sure the level is not too high or gas contaminated.
As for the generator, if the start feature works, that proves the generator/starter is good. Most likely the field contacts in the regulator need to be cleaned. The best way to clean them is with a points file, a special thin file that will fit in the gap to dress the surface. Don't use sand paper! Try to save your original regulator if possible, the new ones are not near the same quality.
