When the coop gas station had a really really bad tank leak a couple decades ago (I dont recall if that meant a gallon or 100 gallons, you know).
The approved disposal was to bag up the dirt affected in big planting bags, and then spread it on the neighboring field.
They left the bags in the mix.....
Spreading the mess on the surface would let the sun and the microbes in the top few inches take care of it all.
So, the solution to spilled petroleum is to spread it on the surface of a field.
I was pretty pissed about the plastic bags that blew onto my farm from this, but they were no problem to the officials, as they had the right boxes checked on their official forums.
