Points could be sticking in voltage regulator.
My SC Case had a 12 volt battery with six volt generator when I bought it in 1990. I put a six volt battery in it and polarized it. And does charge. BUT it charges 20 amp all day long every day. I have filed the points in the regulator and few times and then the regulator will function correctly. Charge 5 to 10 amp for a few minutes and then go back to zero. Doesn't last more then a few hours and the points stick again and back to 20 amp all day. I don't put more than 2hrs a month on it. So it really doesn't hurt anything. I get anywhere from four to eight years out of a battery.
The Bomgaar store lists six volt batteries for $79.00. Have not tried one. Will next time I need one.
