Hate to admit that I bent the hood on a 74 GM pickup many years ago trying to close it. Since then I'm a little more careful and do lube the hinges on all vehicles. Particularly the 52 Mercury. It is rare to find one of them that still have the original hinges not bent or broken. New ones are available at over $500 a pair and a major job to replace involving removing both fenders. So yes,, plenty of oil on those hinges.
