Always check the title number to the actual vehicle number and make sure there are no alterations. It is also best for both parties to get an immediate transfer done. I was with a friend when he purchased a car, he held the title open and later just sold the body to a guy who used it in a restoration. When the guy went to register the car it had been reported stolen. The guy my friend bought the car from had got a duplicate replacement title and reported the car stolen. It turned out that the sellers future/ex father in law had loaned him some money with the car as collateral.
