I remember an ag engineering class I took at Cornell back in the 1980's. I vividly recall the instructor as saying advances such as hydraulics, multi-range transmission, and independent PTO could have been made available much earlier in tractors than what they were. That tractor design was centered around what the customer would most likely pay for during the first half of the 20th Century. The advanced concepts were at least on the drawing board but a design would require a year or two of testing to insure soundness of the design. He prior to being an instructor was an engineer who worked for Ford and later New Holland during the 1970's.
