When did hydraulics first come into use?I know the 1939 9N was the first farm tractor.Indrustrial equipment? Just curious.

In 1935 was Deeres power lift mechanical or hydraulic? Something tells me it was hydraulic but there was no provision for running a remote cylinder.

Harry Ferguson used hydraulics and draft control on the Black Tractor he built in 1933. The production model, the Ferguson Type A was made by David Brown also used Ferguson's hydraulic system. Then in 1938 came the Ford Ferguson, a Ferguson system with improved performance after modification by Ford designers.

For Farmalls, the letter series H's and M's had a hydraulic option when they came out in 39. I think the real option was, whether to order one without it to be able to buy a cheaper tractor.
An after market hydraulic pump was available for the earlier F series. As to whether those pumps were available during the production of the F series, I can't answer that.

Chrysler products had hydraulic brakes in 31 or before. My Dad had 31 Chrysler and a Plymouth made into a pickup later on. My 37 Ford had mechanical , ( ice would freeze them solid) and it also had the single horizontal leaf spring for that lumber wagon solid ride.

The deere a and b were first with power lift.
The first tractor with ferguson system was the David Brown Ferguson in 1934.

The new IH letter series had the hydraulic option right away. Within a couple years, you could get the Lift-All kits to upgrade the F series & Regular. Would love to find a Regular with that installed. Only ever seen one.

I remember an ag engineering class I took at Cornell back in the 1980's. I vividly recall the instructor as saying advances such as hydraulics, multi-range transmission, and independent PTO could have been made available much earlier in tractors than what they were. That tractor design was centered around what the customer would most likely pay for during the first half of the 20th Century. The advanced concepts were at least on the drawing board but a design would require a year or two of testing to insure soundness of the design. He prior to being an instructor was an engineer who worked for Ford and later New Holland during the 1970's.

Bruce, Drott and Buyce-Erie were early developers of hydraulic to replace the old cabel dozer blades. Started showing up in early 30s, very large and slow cylinders and low pressure systems.

Ford cars received hydraulics brakes in 1940. I think Dodge bros had hydraulic brakes in 1926. I don't know who was first.

F series Farmalls had hydraulic pumps available before 1936 I believe. I think Hart Par (Oliver) had live hydraulics & live PTO available even before that. Cockshut was an early company that had both available before many of the more famous brands.

You missed the word tractor in the question??? maybe you should read where it says tractor talk discussion forum, that pretty much spells it out, I could be wrong,

I really do not want to sound like I am arguing and make Kim mad.
BUT....

Like every discussion on this tractor sight is questions to do with tractors.

It was just the way it was worded to me.
I know the 9N was the first tractor but when did hydraulics start.
Maybe I'm reading it wrong.

That will be a hard line to draw with any clarity. I H Regular, Oliver , Wisconsin, Ford, among others, had both. Majority of single cylinder small engines use slingers yet today.
