Typical of the Murphy brand name non electronic ones I have and the ones I have worked on you hold the push button in during starting and continue holding it until sufficient oil pressure has built up.
When oil pressure is up a sending unit delivers the power or ground required to hold the button in on the relay/magnetic switch.
Basic ones are designed to trip and shut down the engine when parameters for temperature or oil pressure go out of the pre set range.
Being that oil pressure is zero with the engine off that parameter is not being met which is why holding in the bypass button during starting is required.
