Hello I have a 800 versatile with a Murphy switch you push it in to start the tractor and it stays in till you shut the ignition off is this normal ?? my other one I believe it is out all the time ( maybe it has been disconnected )Thanks Bryan

There are many models available. So the push to run is a possible design. The other one may be a different model, and you will need to research the operation. They can be connected to fuel level/pressure, water level, Temp, oil pressure, excess RPM, low RPM, and almost any other signal that would be recognized as needing a warning, or shutdown (automatic). So operation either way is possible. Jim

Most times u hold the switch then once it starts oil pressure takes over and keeps it there. So it must be working correctly

I doubt that the Murphy switch was factory. Usually they're added after-market to engines/tractors which are run unattended like irrigation pumps or forage blowers, etc. If that's not the case, just unhook it for more convenience.

Most likely was an add on but if its there why remove it. It can and will save the engine. U are not starring at your gauges constantly to kill the tractor if you loose oil pressure.tractor will will stop then u will say what the heck!

I had a Steiger with the Murphy switch. It was original equipment. I don't remember exactly how it worked, (whether the override/start button stayed in or out) but it did work. The gauges were adjustable. So I imagine you could play with changing the settings on your gauges to see if the system is functioning correctly.

If you have gauges on it that look like the one in the link start the tractor. Then take a coin and hold it so it makes a connection between the outer gauge bezel ring and the round nub that comes through the gauge lens just to the right of the bottom pivot point of the gauge needle. If this is the system you have it will possibly blink a light and or set off a buzzer. Then in 5 to 15 seconds the button should pop out and shut down the engine.

Typical of the Murphy brand name non electronic ones I have and the ones I have worked on you hold the push button in during starting and continue holding it until sufficient oil pressure has built up.

When oil pressure is up a sending unit delivers the power or ground required to hold the button in on the relay/magnetic switch.

Basic ones are designed to trip and shut down the engine when parameters for temperature or oil pressure go out of the pre set range.

Being that oil pressure is zero with the engine off that parameter is not being met which is why holding in the bypass button during starting is required.

Yes, they were "factory". Key # 35.

I learned something, what a Murphy switch is.
I used a 12v relay and a simple toggle switch to remove battery from terramites electrical. Turn toggle off. 12v is removed from solenoid in carb and engine runs out of gas. dies a piecefull death, no backfiring or dieseling.
Also removes drain from Voltage regulator.

Hello in my operators manual it shows that it is OEM , but it dose not tell the position of the button , My 145 also had a murphy switch but when I re powered it didn't work ( manual shut off )
