Blowing them out on occasion helps a lot with durability. Dirt and dust then make juice causes heat the worst enemy of most things. I blow the alternator out on the combine every time I blow the radiator out. Oil and fuel from tractors will do them in fast also. Then I look at our old tractors and the alternator on the 574,674,806have all been on there about 10 to 40 years. Just changed the one on the 806 was on there for many years. 674 looks like it might be the original though I would be surprised if it was. 856 has the old square regulator model will finally be getting changed if the battery does not stay up after my battery change over.
