Have you verified the coil or coil/resistor is correct for the voltage?
A coil drawing too many amps will burn out the trigger unit. They are also polarity sensitive. I don't know what would happen if the polarity were reversed, could burn it up or just not work.
Might try calling Pertronix, I hear they have excellent customer service.
