Other than the straight 30 weight vs 15W/40 the main difference is seen in the label for the 15W/40.
The 15W/40 is for low emission diesels. It is low ash oil and is made for diesels with a particulate filter. Non low ash oil will more quickly plug up the particulate filter.
This is from the local VW dealer when asked about buying oil for my Jetta TDI which has a particulate filter.
