The 260 is best kept on a work bench and not bounced around in a dirty worktruck. The mechanic meter movement is fragile. Connect it to high voltage on a low scale and watch the needle bend. Leaving it on the ohmmeter settings and measure 220v. Then watch the smoke come out. Ask me how I know?
I used 260s for many years, and I agree with everything you say, George.
It seems everyone who has worked around military electronics has a Simpson 260 story. I knew a guy who had worked in the avionics shop at an Army base. He claimed that the folks in the shop discovered they could order the front panel of a 260, everything but the case, as a repair part. And of course the case could also be ordered separately. Which everybody in the shop did, and they all took home their personal Simpson 260s.
