Fluke 117....

Following my post a few days back; I like the Simpson 260...kinda pricey for me. Do you guys think the Fluke 117 would work fine around the farm- generators and alternators? Thanks.

Yes Especially if you want to set the speed of a stand buy generator to 60 Hz. However, I f you have no need for the frequency reading then as steve@advance said, a less expensive 323 would be fine.

I calibrated Simpson 260 at USNAD Crane, In back in the 60s while I was in college on a co-OP program.
Yes the 260 was considered the Gold standard then until digital technology came around.
The 260 is best kept on a work bench and not bounced around in a dirty worktruck. The mechanic meter movement is fragile. Connect it to high voltage on a low scale and watch the needle bend. Leaving it on the ohmmeter settings and measure 220v. Then watch the smoke come out. Ask me how I know?

The $10 cheapie digital stands up to senior moments the 260 won't.

I bought a cheapie digital voltmeter/ frequency meter off Ebay for my portable generator.

Frequency is as important as voltage.

I think it's a pretty good meter, and with a retail price less than 200 bucks, it's fairly reasonably priced for a Fluke. My Fluke 77 is now 30 years old and hasn't given me a bit of trouble.

Yes, you can get meters that will do every thing the 117 will do for less than half as much money, but they won't be Flukes.

I used 260s for many years, and I agree with everything you say, George.

It seems everyone who has worked around military electronics has a Simpson 260 story. I knew a guy who had worked in the avionics shop at an Army base. He claimed that the folks in the shop discovered they could order the front panel of a 260, everything but the case, as a repair part. And of course the case could also be ordered separately. Which everybody in the shop did, and they all took home their personal Simpson 260s.

Steve thanks! I really need a meter with leads and one the needle wont jump around when checking charging systems...or the digital screen....thanks.
