Way back in the early 1970's we were following the RAC Rally in North Wales. I was following my friends heavily modified Ford Anglia (Cortina 1500GT engine, Ford Classic front controll arms etc etc) in my Mini Cooper S.
He went over a hump backed bridge (very common on country roads over railway lines) & on landing, the petrol tank dropped out & exploded on the road right in front uf us! It was like something from a film stunt only scarier, 'cos my Mini was mine... We managed to avoid the explosion & inferno & took stock of the situation.
We both had petrol cans & I had a funnel so we bodged some plastice fuel line onto a funnel & a mate sat in back seat of the Anglia keeping the funnel topped up from cans as they drove along. They managed the 100 odd miles home with definitely no smoking en route!
