Came out of work one night and saw something hanging down under my truck by way of a light that silhouetted it. Front end of gas tank was hanging down as the front strap had rusted through. Used coat hanger wire to hold it up since it was all I could get my hands on, that ratchet strap would have made it so much easier. I'm not laughing too hard at this because this is reality running an old truck in the rust belt.

That is how I got my first 2inch ratchet strap. I was on the side of the road trying to figure out how I was going to get the fuel tank back up. Another driver stopped and gave me a strap. I carried it for years and used it three times to hold tanks up. Old cabover Frieghtliners

Jeeps of that era had a big metal bucket thing that surrounded the tank to hold in the plastic tank. Trouble is the thin metal rusted away and let the tank droop or fall down. That is actually a viable solution.

I had a friend who lost the gas tank out of his 60's era Ford car. He was on his way home from work about midnight and the car died, so he coasted it off to the side and walked the mile or so home. He had filled the tank earlier in the day, so he knew he wasn't out of gas. The next day he convinced himself that the fuel pump had failed because there was no fuel to the carb. He was gonna blow in the tank line and have his son listen for bubbles in the filler neck. Young son asked him where the tank was. Dad told him it was under the license plate. That's when he found out what had happened. He found the tank where it had bounced off in the ditch and it was still nearly full of gas.

Not that i would have laughed (not out loud at least) had I been there but that's hilarious.

That would have been quite a fireworks show had the tank ignited and probably resulted in the need to change underwear.

My Auto mechanics teacher told of working on a deputy sheriff's car for nearly an hour before he discovered the fuel tank was totally missing from the car. The straps broke and it fell out when he crossed a railroad track. I forget whether he told that on himself or another mechanic in the same shop.

Way back in the early 1970's we were following the RAC Rally in North Wales. I was following my friends heavily modified Ford Anglia (Cortina 1500GT engine, Ford Classic front controll arms etc etc) in my Mini Cooper S.
He went over a hump backed bridge (very common on country roads over railway lines) & on landing, the petrol tank dropped out & exploded on the road right in front uf us! It was like something from a film stunt only scarier, 'cos my Mini was mine... We managed to avoid the explosion & inferno & took stock of the situation.
We both had petrol cans & I had a funnel so we bodged some plastice fuel line onto a funnel & a mate sat in back seat of the Anglia keeping the funnel topped up from cans as they drove along. They managed the 100 odd miles home with definitely no smoking en route!

One week after I got a recall notice on my 97 F-150 , which I had bought new , that the fuel tank might fall off , it did , going down the highway. Was full and fuel line still attached. Had to use ratchet strap to get it back up in position and off to dealer. Had 2 more Ford tanks fall off since.
