I had a friend who lost the gas tank out of his 60's era Ford car. He was on his way home from work about midnight and the car died, so he coasted it off to the side and walked the mile or so home. He had filled the tank earlier in the day, so he knew he wasn't out of gas. The next day he convinced himself that the fuel pump had failed because there was no fuel to the carb. He was gonna blow in the tank line and have his son listen for bubbles in the filler neck. Young son asked him where the tank was. Dad told him it was under the license plate. That's when he found out what had happened. He found the tank where it had bounced off in the ditch and it was still nearly full of gas.
