You don't necessarily have to empty the chamber, just get it loose so that you can easily turn it over by hand. Remove the tension and then pry the hay out to the vicinity of the tension adjuster, then loosen what is left. I use a pry bar for this. Loose hay will put adequate pull on the twine to enable you to observe what is going on, yet you can turn it over by hand as you must do. Fluff then feed in the hay that you have pulled out.
