I've started hundreds of engine with out coolant and let run for no more then 5 minutes and NEVER had any problem in doing so. I did get it to run and let it run a couple minutes and then shut it down. I then let it cool for a few minutes and re-torqued the head bolts. Learned to do it this way years ago so as to not have to put in a second head gasket due to the head needing to be re-torqued and had a couple that got coolant in the oil after a new head gasket was install
