1947 cub starts

So got a starter in the mail today and put it on. It does run just a little at times but dies pretty fast. I have not replaced the plug which look pretty old bu seem to fire as in I see a good blue/white spark at all of them but there wet. So tomorrow I'll get 4 new plugs and see if that helps. I did check the compression on #4 cylinder and it is 60psi which seem a bit low but not sure what a cub should have. Either way I am getting close to having it up and running

Hello there Old.... Hey after you get the new spark plugs.... It may not hurt to check the gap if you know that dimension. Can't wait to see a video of your cub running. Wingnut

I can't do videos I can send Grandpa Love a picture or 2 of it running. I'm also switching from Champion UD-16 plugs to the cross of in NGK. Still don't have the timing 100% there but since it tries to run I am close

I just came back in from the shop and the Cub now has run for a couple of minutes. I could not run it long since it doesn't have any coolant in it as of yet. I did re-torque the head bolts and will fill with coolant in the next day or 2. Weather is not suppose to be very good tomorrow so not sure I'll do anything with it tomorrow. But it does run now and has good oil pressure

If I remember right, compression should be around 120psi. Good chance of stuck rings from sitting, maybe get better after it runs for a while. Put a little of your snake oil in the fuel.

I've been keeping up with your Cub progress. I had one for a few years, spent time on them helping others, and many were sold here as folks', especially tobacco farmers, first cultivating tractor. A tobacco grower i helped when young had one. He was a tall, large, not overweight, and husky man. He had a one row tobacco transplanter and a water barrel that he used. With those attached to the tractor, and him driving it, one could hardly see the tractor.

Been soaking the cylinder with ATF pretty much ever since I got it. Did get it to run for a few minutes but could not run it long due to no coolant in the engine.

Now I need to fix the shiftier. The inner part has broken off so I can pull the shiftier out so will need to pull the top cover off and then take the shiftier apart and weld the broken piece back in place

I may have what you need for the shifter as I have a parts cub. Let me know when you get it off if you need parts. It would be very cheap. My email should be open or Gran Pa Love has my phone number.

I have all the parts but the inner what I would call a shoe has broken off of the shiftier so I need to take it apart and weld the inner shoe back onto the shiftier. What I could really use is a picture of what it should look like

Here is the breakdown of the shifter if you can tell anything from the picture, and if it loads.

Did you clean the carb up? My 48 ran much better once I got all the crap out of its carb. My cousin, who is a pilot, suggested that I use avaiation gasoline in my antique tractors. I tried it & have been using av gas since 2018. I haven't had to clean a carb since. This year will be a real test because of my illness & treatment over the last year several of my tractors haven't been started since July of 2019. I plan to get them running by early July. We'll find out if the carbs are gummy.

To get it to start I used a jumper across the ballast resister to give it a hotter spark. Once it fired up and ran the jumper fell off and it kept running. Still needs a good bit of TLC to get it to where I want it but one step at a time. I figured if it ran and had oil pressure then I could move on to the next thing that needs TLC.

By the way it did smoke a good bit at first but I did pour a lot of ATF into it. Plus it blew out piece of stuff out of the exhaust and now I have a gray T shirt with a lot of little black specks all over it

Sounds great to hear you have it running, figured you would. The guys on this site constantly amaze me with the skills they possess and the willingness to help anyone out, really good to see you got this going like you said you would.

Funny thing is I just talked to the guy who sold it to me. He got the cub and a Kama tractor as a package deal and sold me this cub. He got the Kama running and it then locked up on him. His plans are to get an engine for it then have me install the engine

I've started hundreds of engine with out coolant and let run for no more then 5 minutes and NEVER had any problem in doing so. I did get it to run and let it run a couple minutes and then shut it down. I then let it cool for a few minutes and re-torqued the head bolts. Learned to do it this way years ago so as to not have to put in a second head gasket due to the head needing to be re-torqued and had a couple that got coolant in the oil after a new head gasket was install
