If it's burning oil, or down on compression, the new ones won't last long.
The factory ones are better than the aftermarket, but way more expensive. Need to think about how many miles are on it and how long you plan to keep it and the oil consumption before making the decision, if you decide to replace them.
It will run ok without them but always have a check engine light, and will not pass inspection in most areas. Best check your local regulations as to how it is handled. If they don't have inspection requirements, they may have roadside spot checks, get caught without them could be big trouble. Anyone driving behind you will instantly know from the smell!
