How many cat.converters does an 06 f150 5.4 have?which 1 goes bad first? If remove em will the truck still run fine?

It may run fine, but if your state has an emissions test for vehicle inspection I am certain it would fail. Not sure where you are but here in good old Ny we have yearly vehicle inspections and the vehicle is linked to the state computers while being inspected. I currently have a vehicle I can’t drive until I figure out why it keeps throwing a code for one of four oxygen sensors. I think it’s bad wiring somewhere in the harness. Good times !

It's usually the front ones that go bad.

If it's burning oil, or down on compression, the new ones won't last long.

The factory ones are better than the aftermarket, but way more expensive. Need to think about how many miles are on it and how long you plan to keep it and the oil consumption before making the decision, if you decide to replace them.

It will run ok without them but always have a check engine light, and will not pass inspection in most areas. Best check your local regulations as to how it is handled. If they don't have inspection requirements, they may have roadside spot checks, get caught without them could be big trouble. Anyone driving behind you will instantly know from the smell!

it wont run fine,... it will run better. but be careful in your states. here dont matter. just removing mine and i could tell the acceleration is better. removed the egr and improved the mileage and the engine runs cooler. 2006 duramax.

My 05 F150 had a cat go bad. It got so bad it would slow way down, and almost stop. I don't remember which side. I had both replaced. Then the guy wouldn't give me the old ones. Probably just as good, because scrappers will buy cats only from garages. Stan

The "newer" engines are not like the Mid 90s and older Fords. You could cut the cats off them without an issue, a 2006 F150 has both upstream and downstream feedback = meaning before and after the cats. If the sensor "downstream the cats are giving the same reading as "upstream" it could go into "limp" mode and power and fuel mileage will suffer and you will always have a check engine light on.

There are at least 3. There is one right at each exhaust flange and one or two farther back.

If you suspect that one is plugged, you can just loosen the flanges at the manifold outlet on each side and see if it changes things.

Will it run without them? Yes. Is it legal? No. Will it pass inspection? No.

If you get stopped and checked, you might get into some fines and penalties depending on your state and what the laws are. It just isn't like it was back in the 1980s and 1990s. These days, the EPA is a bit more strict about leaving emission control devices intact and operational.

"which 1 goes bad first?"

Typically they are pretty darned reliable until fed raw gas from a cylinder that isn't firing for some reason, or oil from a cylinder with :eek:il control issues".

If your engine has either issue that would explain convertor failure and which one.

Most states, if a car comes in to a garage or the dealer, if the CAT is missing, they are obliged to replace it. Shops can't legally remove them either.

Proceed cautiously.....

The front cat goes bad first and as it comes apart it clogs up the lower cat. It will run fine again when you replace the lower cat but it doesn't take long for it to clog again. I think I got two years out of mine after replacing the lower cat before it stranded me again. I have heard some people take a pointed steel rod and a big hammer and bust up the ceramic guts and dump it and put the cat back on. It runs fine but the check engine light will be on and it won't pass an emissions test if your state requires it.

The cats on my 05 Ranger have been punched out since 2016 and 45,000 miles later, running perfect except for the check engine light. This truck came from CA where it wouldn't pass testing. In MI it doesn't have to.
