What about the drive is breaking?
Is it entering the gear too far and chewing up the sprag case? Or not entering deep enough and breaking the tips of the teeth? Is the drive retainer intact on the end of the shaft? It also serves as a spacer to stop the drive from going too far in.
Those are known for breaking the nose cone, but not the gear.
Have to do some forensics, take some measurements, see what is not right and why.
A couple things to check, end play on the crank, if the crank thrust bearing is gone the flywheel will move forward.
The other is too much timing advance causing kick back.
