Ferguson T30 starter

My mechanic friend is working on a Ferguson T30 Delco starter # 1107654.He has changed the starter drive three times with new starter rings,but the starter drive keeps breaking. He is not sure if this is the correct starter since that was what was in the tractor when the owner delivered it. Has anyone had this problem? Any info would be most appreciated. 1107654 is a 12 volt starter as used on 12 volt TO35 and MF50. Starter drive is same number as 6 volt
TO20 TO30 and TO35. Seems strange you are breaking starter drives.
 
What about the drive is breaking?

Is it entering the gear too far and chewing up the sprag case? Or not entering deep enough and breaking the tips of the teeth? Is the drive retainer intact on the end of the shaft? It also serves as a spacer to stop the drive from going too far in.

Those are known for breaking the nose cone, but not the gear.

Have to do some forensics, take some measurements, see what is not right and why.

A couple things to check, end play on the crank, if the crank thrust bearing is gone the flywheel will move forward.

The other is too much timing advance causing kick back.
 
Is the drive breaking or the nose cone. I went through several nose cones. Ended up buying a new starter from Nations. I also found out the timing needs to be near perfect or it kicks back and breaks nose cones. Cant tell you for sure which fixed it.
 
Good day grotractor......

I have NEVER worked on a Ferguson T30......

However......I have had to add shims on a TEA-20 Ferguson, as starter drive was over engaging causing the drive to destroy itself as well as ring gear...6 VOLT system..

And yes the spigot of the starter was a size for size fit into the bellhousing bore..
