Once or twice a year our power goes out for a day or longer (we were in the dark nearly two WEEKS after an ice storm in 1991!).
We get by fine with a 3,500 watt portable generator feeding a transfer switch. The transfer switch supplies 3 key house lighting circuits, and circuits for the refrigerator, freezer and sump pump. It's not connected to the furnace as the wood stove keeps the house comfortable as long a fire is maintained.
Several neighbors have whole house standby generators. Would like one too but I can't justify the expense for our situation.
