Dave , Don't beat yourself to death on this, The dealer was not all wrong he just screwed up and checked the right thing last!! There is nothing wrong with the fuel system of your tractor the problem is that there is not enough commpreesion to fire the fuel being injected into it. Deisels fire off of the heat created by commpression, when the commpression is as low as what you posted, it never will start expecaly in cold weather air!! The engine is getting fuel into the cylinders (thats the black smoke that you are seeing) The fuel is not being ignited because of not enough heat being created due to the low commpression. I have worked on and rebuilt many of these Yanmar deisel engines over the past sevral years and the most common failure when it came to a hard starting complaints was low commpression. ussally caused by dirt getting into the engine somtime in its life causing the pistonring/ cylinder relationship to fail. Another thing to watch on these engines is that to keep the glow plugs working this too will make them start hard even in warm weather air. To prove the heat therory take the air intake hose off the engine and blow warm air from a heat gun or hair dryer down the intake of the engine while cranking it to start, good chance it will start right up and if it does that will tell you that theres not enough heat being created by commpression. A very simple test to perform, let us know what you learn and if that don't steer you in the right direction I will give you different test to perform but thats where I would start. Good Luck!!

Today's Featured Article - Third Brush Generators - by Chris Pratt. While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point ... [Read Article]
