i think so too. i used to chopped the hole open everyday day and had to make sure they drink. not fun in a blizzard either. then the ice gets 3 ft thick its fun making a new hole. i use a power saw but dont put any oil in it. any smell of oil and another reason they wont drink. plus it takes time for them to trust going on the ice. i even would spread straw around the hole and no way they would go on the ice. so i coome up with this idea. this way i only need to fill the tank every three days. plus its better for the cows having warm water to drink.
