i built this tank heater last winter and give it some fine tuning today. added a couple kelly bushings on each side for weight as it was light with a full tank of water. and put a swivel on the top.

i would like to have a better vent on the bottom. as you see that angle iron on the side i have a hole on the bottom there. and have stool on the bottom with holes in it for air. i might put a 2" pipe up from the bottom for a better air vent next year. other than that it works pretty good. when i put coal in it it lasts till the next day . cows are in the far end of the farm so have no power out there.

thats a 16" conductor barrel. these bushing rollers are from a small double i was drilling on about 30 years ago. now top drive units have replaced the kelly's.

HHHMMMM now you got me thinking...

I'd rather chop wood and pack coal then have to chop ice..

I guess tomorrow I better start looking for a chunk of pipe..

i think so too. i used to chopped the hole open everyday day and had to make sure they drink. not fun in a blizzard either. then the ice gets 3 ft thick its fun making a new hole. i use a power saw but dont put any oil in it. any smell of oil and another reason they wont drink. plus it takes time for them to trust going on the ice. i even would spread straw around the hole and no way they would go on the ice. so i coome up with this idea. this way i only need to fill the tank every three days. plus its better for the cows having warm water to drink.

Some spray foam would fill in those open corners quite nicely. That would keep the water soft a bit longer after the fire 🔥 has gone out. 😜

Yes, Top drives, mud motors, electronic weight indacators, recorders, automatic drillers. Service company I worked for got lost in lurch and stayed with hyd drilling controls.

Ive got 3 tanks that I have to keep full.. when totally empty its around 1000-1200 gal.. if I pump every night i can keep it at about 500/600.. Ive got a 30 GPM submersible that i run with a generator... the closest grid power is over 3/4 of a mile way..

Thanks for the Idea!! I think I have a section of 18" casing floating around here somewhere. ever thought about putting the chimney straight out the top??

I may have to try and get build one sure would be nice to have might be better than running electric cords

If you were to weld some bar stock on edge vertically onto the outside perimeter, it would improve heat transfer to the water.

Like cooling fins on the power transformer up on the pole.
