My NH is also 42 inches wide, and it is tight to put it through a 48 inch door fram, as the swinging door, as the door narrows the available space a bit. Being as how you need to modify your entrance , go as wide as is practical, like 60 inches if possible. There is always going to be material over hanging the sides of your skid loader bucket, when cleaning out pens. Your barn looks to have nice high ceilings, so clearance over head shouldn�t be a problem. And if you do go to large round bales, having a 60 inch wide door will make it better to put 48 in wide bales of hay and straw through. I can put bales either in from ground level, or drop 4x4 bales from the hay lift up stairs. Nice to have the option
