The first thing to check is the apron chain more than a ything else. Get all of the mechanism that makes the apron move freed up. Bearings might be bad in the front and rear cross shafts the apron runs on. Manure and rain and inactivity dont do the bearings any good. Used engine oil spread across the floor will help the apron chain pull easier through the first few loads until the underside of the slats and floor get shined up. Run a half load or less through it first in case something goes wrong with the apron. If the apron chain breaks you or he gets to pitch it off by hand.
The OSHA unapproved way to pitch it back out is to tie the steering wheel. Put the tractor in low gear at a dead idle. The slower the low gear the better. Get off the tractor climb into the spreader with a pitchfork in your hand and start pitching.
